Instructions

HW1 — Critical Literature Synthesis & Interface Critique

Description

Write a 300-word position paper analyzing an AI tool through the lens of the Week 1–2 readings.

Tasks

  1. Select an intelligent everyday application (e.g., ChatGPT, email smart reply, or a recommendation engine).
  2. Critique the application using the tension between Direct Manipulation vs. Interface Agents (Shneiderman & Maes, 1997) and Power to the People (Amershi et al., 2014).
  3. Evaluate how effectively the tool supports human agency versus over-automating decisions.
  4. Propose two concrete UX redesigns to resolve the identified issues.

HW2 — Applied Needfinding & Low-Fidelity Prototype

Description

Produce a 2–3 page project discovery report and an initial paper prototype for an individual design concept.

Tasks

  1. Observation & Persona — Conduct a brief participant observation session (15–20 min) of a user interacting with an existing intelligent application. Construct 1–2 user personas based on observed pain points, referencing Klemmer’s observation video (Week 3) and Visme’s persona-creation method.

  2. Problem Critique — Identify user-reported issues (loss of control, unpredictability, or lack of transparency) inspired by When People and Algorithms Meet (Eslami et al., IUI 2019).

  3. Ideation & Prototyping — Use a brainstorming technique (Chainstorm or Tweetstorm from Week 4 readings) to design an alternative interface. Create a low-fidelity paper prototype demonstrating a mixed-initiative approach balancing agent automation with user control.

GP0 — Team Formation, Charter & Project Journal Setup

Objective

Establish your project group, align team expectations, sign a formal working agreement, and launch your public-facing team journal website.

Part 1 — Team Working Agreement (Charter)

Schedule a team meeting and draft a brief agreement covering:

  • Roles & Responsibilities — Communication lead, technical/prototyping lead, project manager
  • Communication & Meetings — Preferred channels and weekly meeting times
  • Conflict & Accountability — Expectations for deadlines and equitable work division
  • Sign-off — All members print, sign, and upload a digital copy

Part 2 — Project Journal Website

Set up a team website (Google Sites, GitHub Pages, or Notion) to document your project throughout the term.

GP1 — Co-Designing & Authoring VR Interventions for Older Adults

Due: Friday, Oct 2 · 15%

Objective

Engage directly with older adults (ages 70+) to co-design an interactive VR intervention supporting cognitive health, memory, or daily routine management. Teams move from real-world needfinding through paper prototyping to authoring a functional 9-screen VR experience on the course web-authoring tool, validated on the Meta Quest 3.

Phase 1 — Needfinding & Unplugged Ideation

  • Engage target users — Interview or observe at least one older adult (70+) to understand daily routines, cognitive challenges (pill management, short-term recall, spatial awareness), or mobility goals.
  • Paper prototyping — Design an “unplugged” 9-step activity using paper cards, state diagrams, or storyboards before using the authoring tool. Map the full sequence, state transitions, and user prompts.

Phase 2 — Digital Authoring & Orchestration

Final Reflection Essay

Due: Saturday, Dec 5 · 10%

Description

Write an individual reflection essay (800–1,200 words). This is a reflective synthesis — not a summary of the course.

Address all four prompts:

  1. Most important insight — What is the most important thing you learned about designing AI systems for human use? Give a concrete example from your project or the course.
  2. Changed thinking — How did your perspective on AI and society shift over the semester? What challenged your assumptions?
  3. Ethical dimension — Choose one ethical issue in AI design (fairness, transparency, privacy, manipulation, access) and describe how you would address it as a designer.
  4. Looking forward — What aspect of Human-AI Interaction do you most want to explore further? What question do you wish this course had answered?

Contribution Statement Requirements

Team Contribution Statement (included in the group submission)

A brief breakdown in the project documentation outlining specific work items completed by each team member for that milestone.

Individual Contribution Statement (private Canvas submission)

Each student submits a private reflection form covering:

  • Personal Contributions — Bulleted list of tasks you personally owned and completed
  • Effort Allocation — Estimated percentage of work contributed by each member
    (e.g., Member A: 35%, Member B: 35%, Member C: 30%)
  • Team Dynamics — Short statement on collaboration quality, responsiveness, and equity of work distribution
